Do You Need A Fire Grate?

Many folks with fireplaces in their homes wish to know if fire grates really are that necessary or important. With everyone trying to tighten their belts, it is easy to understand why nobody just wishes to buy anything without carefully considering it first. There are so many products being marketed to us on a daily basis that we tend to get confused about which ones we really need, and which ones we do not need to buy. While it is true that a fire grate is not exactly “necessary”, but read the points below to see what your experience in burning fires in your fireplace would be like without a fire grate:

1. Without a fire place grate, the logs that you place in your fireplace will not burn as efficiently. Once logs are consumed by the fire and turn into coal, they will end up on the floor of your fireplace. When this happens, they will not be used as efficiently by the fire, because air will be coming only from the top portion of the coal. In not using a fireplace grate that places the fire closer to your chimney, fumes and smoke are also likely to end up in your living room and all throughout your home, too.

2. Not having a fire grate also means spending more money for fuel and energy or having to manually move the logs around your fireplace using a fire poker, just to be able to control the fire.

3. Fire hazards are greater without fire grates. This fire can leave your property greatly damaged, if not completely obliterated. You also risk the lives of the residents of your home. Having a fireplace grate really is all about managing and controlling where the logs of wood and coals in your fireplace are, as well as where the smoke and fumes end up. Without a fireplace grate, you are not keeping your property safe and protected from this fire hazard.

4. Without a fire place grate, you are also not protecting your fireplace’s floor too well. Fire is a powerful element that can cause even the strongest of materials to incur damage after some time, including stone or cement floors. A fireplace floor that is extremely damaged will need to be replaced. If you wish to extend the lifespan of your floor, you might want to use a fire grate.

5. It could take a whole lot of work to maintain your fire, without a fireplace grate in place. The majority of fireplace grates have a back and front that can curl upwards. Their designs also allow them to feed logs on their own, without your having to manually feed the logs into the fire yourself. Without a fire grate, you will need to monitor your fire frequently.
